Description:

Malta in 1850s

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Marlborough_(1855)

copy of an old photo passed on to me by a dear old friend. Bearing in mind that this was taken about 150 years ago ,it is very clear and crisp. It would be great to identify the man-of- war in mid harbour.
photo thanks to Mr.C.Zmmit

Well honestman,HMS MARLBOROUGH and all the vessels of that era make interesting reading seeing that as the times have passed during these more than 150 years great changes have been effected, several wars have been fought and inventions have changed history.
regards.

Hi rarcand, 1100 packed into a wooden hull must have been quite an experience ,health and safety regulations must have been not in existence or still in their very infancy.thanks and regards

According to this site, the crew could have numbered 1100 : http://www.pdavis.nl/ShowShip.php?id=2

If HMS MARLBOROUGH of 1855 carried all those cannons and all those sails ,I wonder what was the number of her crew, must have been hundreds crammed into her hull.Any info on the number? regards.

Thank you Denis. Incidentally my last comment should read 1855 and not 1955. Thanks and regards.

If you check this, http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4091726, you will find it matches the figurehead of this ship.

@ Malim,,thanks info,, definitely I like the three deckers 100 years earlier much better

It's her own funnel. This is one of the ships converted to steam power by the RN circa 1850.
It looks as if the vessel alongside her has been similarly converted.

Thanks Becky,, what I wonder too what is the black cylinder between mast 1 and 2,, already some aux system or is it a launch/tug behind her ?

I don't think so Ted. Victory was laid down almost 100 years earlier and had 101 guns. However they were both 3 decker ships of the line

Great post Emmanuel !!!! I build a 3.5 foot model of the HMS Victory some 20 years ago, this one looks very similar, same class of ships perhaps ?

I can't help you indentifying; I'm not that old ;)
Great picture.
It would be great to see the difference in Valleta, when you can make a photo from the same point of view nowadays.
