Description:
17/05/2006, under detention at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.
An ex beam trawler which had been in private ownership and registered in Gibraltar.
In early 2001, the vessel left Gibraltar, then Spanish waters, crossed the Atlantic Ocean, and traversed the Panama Canal, travelling south to the Colombian coastline area, where, it is believed, three tons (3,000 kg's.) of cocaine was loaded on board.
The vessel tevelled south, over 100 miles offshore the Chilean coast, pasing Cape Horn at the end of February, then headed for Rio de Janeiro, and from there headed to a point in Africa.
The vessel was under surveillance by British Authorities for the duration.
In the first week of April, a request was made to the Spanish Aduanas (Customs /Tax Agency) to intercept the vessel when south of the Canary Islands.
This took place at 0400 hrs., eleven miles off the coast of Lomé, the capital of Togo, by the Agency vessel 'Petrel'.
The boarding operation took less than five minutes, and no resistance was encountered from the seven crew members of the vessel: the captain, of Dutch nationality, four Chilean citizens, one Portuguese and one undocumented, who was believed to be French. The 3,000 Kg's of cocaine were quickly detected, and all the crew were arrested
The vessel was escorted to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and remained under detention until late 2006.
