The development of "Balder Challenger" was an interesting story. Although she has a similari appearance to the Balder Hudson/Baffin/Cabot/Davis built at Marystown shipyard, she was not a Balder design. Marystown was in financial trouble, and the government of Newfoundland was facing an election, so the Govt ordered the ship as means of keeping the shipyard financially solvent. PetroCanada (which was then a Government-owned entity, said that they would take the ship on charter, but they did not want to be the Operator. So the operation of the ship was put out to tender, and Balder Offshore Canada was selected.
