The Northern Pacific is an area of terrible gales, long and high waves. This hasn't been the only accident. In December 2004 the 1998-built panamax bulkcarrier SELENDANG AYU (IMO 9145528) suffered an engine failure during bad weather and stranded off Unalaska Island. Six crew members died during a rescue operation by a helicopter which crashed. A rogue wave broke over the ship's bow end engulfed the helicopter with spray. It's engines went out from the water ingestion. The crew of three of the helicopter was rescued by another helicopter later while 6 crew members were lost. The ship broke into two parts.

Always suspect...the "elongations"....The GREED!
1964.....needed to be far off-shore to be sure. Nav-Aids were pretty poor back then.
RIP...Those 30 people.
