Great explanattion lappino. Altought when you have two boats, one is for rescue, getting that boat back to deck with waves could be a very difficult and dangerous sittuation.
I don't know what is the best type pf lifeboat.

There's no obligation to put a free-fall on new vessels. In case of a free-fall lifeboat, the vessel still has to have another rescue boat, so it's a two boat arrangement in either case (of the two side davit launched lifeboats, one doubles as a rescue boat; winch on its side is stronger to allow for hoisting up).
For me, it's the question of safety: on three separate occasions I've witnessed accidents involving side launched lifeboats, due to davit arms not dropping at the same speed, resulting in damaged lifeboats. In one case, the boat got itself a nice 30x30cm hole after striking the davit post, thus becoming unusable.
Davit hoisting limit switches can also malfunction, resulting in broken wire ropes leading to all sorts of nasty stuff - Maersk has experience ending in fatalities.
So, free-fall lifeboat are safer (but I remember very well hitting the back of my head when we hit the water during a free-fall boat testing, and being almost completely submerged, as someone forgot to fully close the forward hatch...) :)

Actually this style is more expensive then the newer style of one free-fall boat as this has two boats which are quite expensive and two david systems. All new ships have nowadays a free fall unless it is a special construction etc. I am not really sure if it has to be a free fall nowadays or if it is still optional

Mostly new build ships has free Fall launch life boats. This ships was build in 1996. Is relatively old. I don´t think is a matter of cost putting one or another life boats.

Sorry to be a pain, so many questions @4:30am! Also on looking at her set-up with lifeboats, I notice on some bulk carriers, mv ALICE OLDENDORFF for example, she has one of those down-facing lifeboats whereas this vessel has two 'slow-launching' lifeboats. Is it a cost issue with some shipping companies?
