Jurgen - Assocaited Humber Lines (AHL)Melrose Abbey carried 88 passengers on the Hull -Rotterdam service - cars loaded onto the fordeck. Until the advent of North Sea Ferries RORo ships in 1965 this was the way you got from Hull to Rotterdam - in tandem with her sister mv Bolton Abbey. These ships succeeded the pre war AHL steamers SS Melrose Abbey and SS Bury in the late 50's. AHL were not taken over by NSF but went out of business in 1971 as they could not compete with NSF's ROrO service - in fact the last passenger service to Rotterdam was carried out by the Melrose Abbey on 30/11/1971 and the last freight service by MV Leeds to Antwerp on 01/12/71- the last AHL sailings.

Pica
Melrose Abbey (Associated Humber Lines) did indeed carry passengers on the Hull Rotterdam daily service with her sister ship Bolton Abbey from Riverside Quay later moving to Alexandra Dock.
The service was taken over by North Sea Ferries and as of today P&O Ferries

Hello PWR,
looking at the seize of the superstructure and the people standing on deck I guess she carried passengers.
Is that right?
Thanks for any info
Reg Jürgen
