Description:
The Estonian minelaying submarine LEMBIT is seen here in one of the two WW I-vintage former German airship hangars of the Estonian Maritime Museum (Eeste Mere Muuseum), located in Tallinn's Hiidrosadam (Seaplane harbour), a.k.a. Lennusadam. Originally commissioned 14 May 1937 in Great Britain as one of two minelaying submarines ordered by Estonia, she was after the Soviet occupation of 1940 incorporated in the Suviet Baltic Fleet. Her operational career ended in 1955 and she was employed in various static auxiliary roles at Gorkiy. She deployed in 1979 to Tallinn where, on 27 April 1992, she was occupied by members of the Estonian Home Defence League (Kaitseliid) so as to thwart Russian intentions of towing LEMBIT to Kronshtadt. Entered in the Estonian Naval Vessels Register as Unit No. 1. Since serving as an active naval unit in the role of museum vessel, she was officially decommissioned from the Estonian Navy on 16 May 2011 and soon after placed ashore.
