Since the waterline is in red color, I'm pretty sure that picture was rather taken in early 1990s. In 1980s it was green.

These big semicontainer ships were ordered by Polish Ocean Lines as an effort made to modernize the Far East Line.
Marine Industries Ltd. from Sorel delivered four such ships, that replaced "Hel" class, in service to Japan.
Unique architecture among PLO ships was also due to cargo gear ("Speedcranes" derricks and Brissonaeau & Lotz electric cranes).
However, part of the equipment was Polish built - like the main engine Sulzer 8RND90 from Cegielski.

In common opinion, at their big deadweight, the ships lacked one more hold for optimal cargo separation to different destinations.
The Hold No.2 was the only one equipped with container guides and pontoon covers.
After being sold by Polish Ocean Lines, they were rebuilt to full container ships.

Interesting pictures of "Artur Grottger" in Sydney (December 1981) can be found at Getty images (editorial section).
Fotoflite.com has nice series of "Józef Chełmoński" under her charter name: "Ocean Anna".
