Photographed arriving at Avonmouth exactly fifty years ago today, on the sunny morning of 5th September 1966, is Caraibische Scheepvaart Maats’ 1956 Cammell Laird, Birkenhead, built CALAMARES.

Created by United Fruit in 1956 for the purpose of management by Van Nievelt, Goudriaan, of CALAMARES and her two sisterships CARTAGO and CARRILLO, the Dutch Caribbean Shipping Company went on during 1969/71 to have eleven further United Fruit vessels transferred to its nominal ownership.

CALAMARES was transferred in 1977 to United Fruit’s Honduras subsidiary company before being sold to Taiwan breakers, arriving at Kaohsiung on 7th January 1979.
