Description:
The 1942 J.L.Thompson, Sunderland, built, Panama flagged, NUNEZ DE BALBOA made an unforgettable sight slowly passing Portishead on the afternoon of 23rd October 1966, so exactly fifty years ago today, inbound for Avonmouth with a cargo of sulphur from Coatazcoalcos in Mexico.
Delivered to Albyn Line (Allan, Black & Co. of Sunderland) as THISTLEMUIR, and owned since 1961 by Adolfo Ramirez Escudero of Bilbao in the Basque region of Spain, NUNEZ DE BALBOA was soon sold for breaking, arriving at Osaka in May 1968 for that purpose.
This photo, with a more detailed caption, can be seen in my book entitled Bristol Port and Channel Nostalgia, published by Coastal Shipping of Portishead.
