Description:
US Navy Arleigh Burke Class Flight I AEGIS equipped destroyer. She is named after the commander of the Pacific fast carrier task force in World War II.
She was commissioned in 1994 and weighs 8900 tons. She has a draft of 31 feet and a top speed of over 30 knots.
She is armed with 2 Vertical Launch Missile Groups (total of 90 cells) that can carry SM-2 & SM-6 Medium/Long Range Surface to Air Missiles, SM-3 Anti Ballistic Missiles, Evolved Sea Sparrow short range Surface to Air Missiles, Tomahawk Land Attack Cruise Missiles, Long Range Anti Ship Missiles and VL-Asroc Anti Submarine Rockets plus has launchers for Harpoon Anti Ship Missiles. Also has a 5" gun, two 20mm Phalanx Close in weapon system, 25mm and 0.50 cal machine guns, and 12.75" ASW Torpedos. She can also refuel and rearm helicopters on her after pad.
See is departing Norfolk Naval Station going east past Fort Monroe Hampton VA. She was one of eight destroyers that sortied that day in support of the Composite Unit & Joint Task Force exercise for the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) Carrier Strike Group.
