Yes. What I would re4ally like to find is a image taken just after the initial 1974 conversion. I am sure that it must have been written up and illustrated in the technical journals at the time, particularly in France.

Many thanks David (davidships),, that's indeed a great/fine picture of her (in the link)... and she looks quite imposing on that particular picture! :-)

I guess that, that picture is dated after 1990 because the 'huge' construction for anchor stoppers ( 2 sets per each side) were constructed and fitted onto the vessel at VLS in 1990.... there was no such of them when vessel arrived to VLS (they were fitted at VLS as additional items to the vessel)

Maybe it is an error, Pascal, though I suspect that something happened around then - Lloyd's Register usually pretty accurate with that sort of thing as info would have come from insurance market. I get the impression that the 1974 conversion was to a self-propelled drillship or similar, so maybe something happened in 1977 which led to her becoming a non-propelled unit, and being deleted form LR in 1978. In the 1990s described by Forasol-Foramer as a "barge-tender" or "tender-barge". Still digging!

Another pic, but undated:

Well done guys!
Adding just a little:
1963-1970 renamed SAINT BERNARD
Apparently a total loss in 1977 as ILE D'OUESSANT (anyone know the circumstances?)

Only now I remember.... the name of the owners/managers: FORASOL-FORAMER, Velizy Villacoublay, Paris, France (at least that is the Company that signed the Contract for drydocking&repairs of CORMORANT with shipyard Viktor Lenac, Rijeka, Croatia)

Hello.. hello, Rick... and thank very much! :-)) ..... I will now transfer this pic/ship to the photo Category: Crane barges.
A *Crane barge*... that was my initial thought also.... but, does this Crane barge, however, have an IMO number since it was converted from an ex commercial type built ship (if I somehow remember, built in early 70s, but am not sure on that) !?

Yes indeed,, port of Ortona, Italy is the Micoperi's (Offshore contractor Micoperi S.p.A., Milano, Italy) operating base, and by the CORMORANT at that time, were anchored/moored also the Micoperi fleet while I was onboard CORMORANT for the *Vessel Inspection* (for the bidding purpose of her forthcoming drydocking & repairs).
But, Rick, keep in mind, that CORMORANT was a vessel owned by the eminent French offshore company with head office in Paris.

And yes, Rick... you are absolutely free to copy this photograph and send it to the Italian nautical website........ IMO is still required, please!!
Cheers my friend & thank you in advance /Jadran

Hi Jadran, thanks for the additional photo.
It is clearly a crane barge, non-propelled, by it's appearance.
I feel sure that the vessel is a converted merchant ship which has had it's bridge removed to allow the helicopter platform to be installed.
The Ortona connection is interesting, as it is shown as Micoperi's main operating base, so I am suspecting a Micoperi link.

Despite searching further- still nothing!

May I copy your photos and place them on an Italian nautical website for help with identification please?
We will get to a result - in time. hahaha

Thanks, Rick

Reminiscent of DEEP SEA WORKER (built as SEDCO 445 by Mitsui in 1971, and now DEEPWATER NAVIGATOR). Sedco Forex were involved with her about 1990 - but I cannot really match her much better than that.

Hi Rick,, nice to hear from you again!

I shall try to herewith provide some additional information ( if I recall everything well from the today distance of time):
1) CORMORANT attended at VLS for refit from September till December 1990 and again from February till April 1991;
2) Before refit at VLS, CORMORANT was stationed/had her operation base at Ortona, Italy;
3) Aft of the forecastle of CORMORANT, there was fitted onto the crane pedestal a high lifting capacity CLYDE revolving crane;
4) The owner was a well known, esteemed and highly reputable French offshore company with their head office in Paris; I think the name of the Company started with "F" (something like Forex... but I'm not sure at all ! )
5) I have just posted another picture of CORMORANT... maybe it will help for identification of this vessel's Category/type

Dobar dan Jadran, I have been trying to identify this vessel since you posted it, & to my surprise I have had no luck!
Clearly it is a converted cargo(?) vessel and from the hull form I suggest it was built in the late 1950's or early 1960's.
Thus there is most likely a relevant IMO number - if we can identify her original name.
A search through Lloyd's Indexes of 1990-1994 reveal no suitable vessel. Miramar ship register, likewise.
Can I ask:
a) Is the date of September 1990 correct?
&
b) Can you obtain any further information from the VL archives?

I am thinking that the ship's name may have been changed before re-delivery from VL...

Still searching, regards,
Rick
