US Military Sealift Command Henry J. Kaiser class fleet replenishment oiler.
Second of a class of 18 authorized and 16 built (2 cancelled while building) with 1 sold to Chile later. Can carry up to 180,000 barrels of fuel. Also carries up to 8 refrigerated 20' Containers and has 7400 square feet of dry storage area. All these supplies are for transfer to other ships to support them while on missions.
Weighs up 42,382 tons full load and has a top speed of 20 knots with a civilian crew of 89 plus 21 US Navy Personnel.
She was first commissioned in 1987, but was out of service in reserve from 1996 to 2005 and briefly in 2006.
She returned to Norfolk Naval Base in early December 2016 after being with the 5th Fleet in the Indian Ocean area for SIX years.
She is normally not armed but can be fitted with machine guns and grenade launchers for security in the harbor, manned by US Navy personnel. Also, provision was made in her design to have 2 Mk 15 20mm Phalanx Close In Weapon Systems fitted if they are ever needed.
She is seen here going east past Fort Monroe Hampton VA.
