Intercoastal Maritime unit towing a crane barge east past Fort Monroe Hampton VA. She spun the unit in the out going tide (flowing east) to change from a push to a tow configuration. The barge appears to be a US Navy "YD" series unit, but has had the number painted over, maybe she has been sold or surplussed?

Thanks for the information and back story!!! on Feb 16, 2017 15:16 (1 year ago)
I'm the captain of the Southern Star. The YD was acquired by Smith Shipyard in Curtis bay, Md.

Originally, we were to tow the rig stern first, but it was very unstable. Reluctantly, we reconfigured to tow bow first and it was still just as wild. The reason we didn't start out now first is the boom of the YD was hanging 75' past the headlog, and at almost the hight of our upper house. One moment of inattention and the upper house could have gotten erased. Luckily, we had no excitement that day. Thanks for the photos of our boat
