For those who don't know why this vessel is considered "Ancient," she was built in 1888 at Shelburne VT as the CHATEAUGAY for operation on Lake Champlain. She was then a sidewheel steamer, 205 feet in length. In 1940 she was cut apart and shipped overland to Lake Winnipessaukee and renamed MOUNT WASHINGTON. In 1976 her superstructure was rebuilt with additonal capacity, and in 1983 she was lengthened to 230 feet.
