Description:

27th January 1967, exactly fifty years ago today, was the first of three full days spent at Gravesend armed with a new camera bought at Wimbledon.

The third ship to be photographed on that day was Royal Mail Lines' AMAZON, built at Belfast in 1959.

She was transferred to Shaw, Savill & Albion in 1968 and renamed AKAROA but sold in 1971 to Ugland for conversion into the vehicle carrier AKARITA.

Later: 1977 HUAL AKARITA - 80 AKARITA

AKARITA finally arrived at Kaohsiung in December 1981 for breaking.

Great photo. Those final Royal Mail passenger liners were beautiful ships but too conservative in terms of design. The French built a similar-type ship, the PASTEUR in 1966 and this one did last even less time than the RML sisters, only 6 years

Was my favourite SHIP (the best looking, and for me, an adorable one) when I was of age 10,, have had a "Triangle ships" casted metal model of her !!

Btw,, her conversion to Vehicle carrier (PCC) was performed at shipyard Viktor Lenac, Rijeka, Croatia (then YU) in 1971/72 - name AKARITA

Best regards /Jadran
