|Savannah Waterfront, Savannah GA USA
The old Savannah Waterfront is an excellent place to do ship spotting. The “old port” portion of Savannah is actually located closer to the sea than the new container and vehicle carrier terminals. Therefor most of your ocean going ships coming into Savannah cruise right past the waterfront. Savannah is a fairly decently busy port, with probably 5-10 (or more) large ships (container and vehicle carriers primarily) going past the waterfront.
The waterfront is a popular place that can be crowded at times. Parking is an issue, with limited amount of public parking and do expect to pay for it. I parked at my hotel during my visit and just walked back and forth. Downtown and Old Savannah is a very walking friendly city. There are cobblestone cities and large stairs, so be prepared. There is ONE elevator from street level to waterfront level and the city hall.
There are ample restaurants downtown, but they can be pricey. There are also some public bathrooms.
This picture was taken early in the morning and shows a typical street scene early in the morning with the river in the background. You are close enough to the river that you can actually get some great pictures. Also, the hotel I stayed at had a roof top pool and deck that provided some excellent shots, and if you are staying overnight there I would recommend trying to book a place that has this or something similar (there are many).
Hope this helps.
