Description:

Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, Virginia Beach (Norfolk) VA USA

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT) was completed in 1964 and connects the Virginia Beach-Norfolk VA area with the North Shore of Virginia. The highway it carries is US 13. The complex spans the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. For further see link-
http://www.cbbt.com/

Approximately ¼ of the way across the bridge coming from Virginia Beach there is the first set of tunnel islands for the Thimble Shoals passage. Over this passage passes all of the ocean going ships heading towards the Hampton Roads and Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. At this tunnel, currently there is a fishing pier and restaurant/rest area that you can pull off and take pictures. It does well for large vessels, but due to glare from sun – smaller ship pictures can be a challenge.

It does cost approximately to $15 for private vehicles to get onto the bridge.

Also, this area will be closing in October 2017 for up to 5 years to allow the building of a parallel lane of tunnels. When this is completed, it is planned to reopen the parking area and pier – but not the restaurant.

This picture is taken from the fishing pier towards the rest area facing east.

Hope this helps.
