That design seems to be quite ubiquitous. Is there a name for the design?

Well Rick, both those Shell VLCC, I remember quite well having worked at the dockyard, they were of a monstrous size ,very high when empty and tiresome to climb on and then go down to the cathedral size of the engine room, you would exhaust yourself even before starting on the job in hand proper, not to mention having to haul bag of tools all the way. But then I was still young not in my 70s +.
Time passes and waits for no one.
Thanks and regards Rick.

Ah, thanks Emmanuel. Having never been to Malta, I had no way of knowing if that was the case. I sailed on the Lampas twice, but drydocked in Lisbon. Maybe one day I will visit the Grand Harbour.

It is great to have friends such as Mario who forwards me these photos from inside the yard.
This is no.6 dock ,the largest dock in Malta and if I am not mistaken even in Europe.Yes those two Shell VLCC used this large dry dock.
Thanks and regards Rick.

Thanks to your pal Mario, Emmanuel for these shots.
The vessel seems dwarfed by the drydock, which leads me to ask, was this the dd that Shell's VLCC's Lampas (& Lepeta?) entered, many years ago?
Regards, Rick
