I think most of these container ships between 5000 and 8000 Teus and even younger are no longer profitable. I agree that it's madness, but it is what we are seeing now practically every day.
Thanks for your comments Jens, Matty, David and mi amigo Volker. Cheers, Manuel.

The madness was in ordering so many containerships in the first place (though not necessarily the ones that are being scrappped prematurely).

As I understand it, in this case the ship was initially built for a subsidiary of Alliance & Leicester Commercial Finance (part of Bank Santander) at a cost of $52mn with a five year charter to CMA CGM - the charterer subsequently purchased the subsidiary.

CAM CGM then unloaded it 2 years later for $45mn to a Hammonia-run partnership, with a charter back. The investors will not have been happy to see the ship go after five years for a paltry $8.1mn.

Plenty of low-mileage spare parts becoming available.

Slowly but surely I'm having a hard time keeping my records up-to-date with all these "youngsters" being demolished at such a fast pace.

A nice catch of a time when the container business was still booming, but as we all know disaster struck quickly...

Cheers
Jens
