The box is to house a conveyor that extends out from the side of the ship to unload. There is one on each side.
It meant that there had to be a conveyor system on the land side to move the cargo away from the ship.
Newer self-unloaders have a slewing boom that gives them more flexibility.
This ship carried gypsum from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to Newington, New Hampshire which had the appropriate shore facilities.

Does anyone know the purpose of the big box just to the left of the boat davit.
