Description:

US Navy North Carolina battleship now preserved as a memorial to all World War II NC Veterans in Wilmington NC at Eagles Island along the Cape Fear River. She is at low tide showing the amount of mud and silt that has accumulated around her since docking in her slip in 1961. In the background you can see cofferdam that is being built around her to along the slip to be drained and work on her hull to be done, the first in over 50 years. This has to be done due to the fact you would either have to remove her superstructure or take down the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge to get her to the closest dry dock capable of handling her. The up side is that the cofferdam will be left in place after the work is done allowing work to be done in the future and it will also be open to the public to allow all around views of the ship.
Taken from the river taxi Bizzy Bee that goes from Eagles Island to the Wilmington proper on the other side of the Cape Fear River.
