Description:

ARTEMIS rotting away at Bremer Kai, Hansahafen, Hamburg, 01.03.2017

Artemis is a classical wooden yawl built by Summers & Paine at Southampton.

In the summer of 1900 she entered service, starting her first voyage with a crew of nine. She was owned by a certain Mr. Frank Loughborough Pearson from London.

She took part in several sailing races, among them one with the German imperial yacht "Meteor".

In 1904 she was sold to Colonel W.G. Nicholsen. Not much is known about his ownership and she was sold again in 1938 to Mr. William Bentley.

With the beginning of WW II her heyday came to an end. During the war she is said to have serviced as a ballon tender on the Thames.

In 1947 she entered service as a houseboat for the Bentley family at West Mersea on the Blackwater River and continued in that role until 1994 when circumstance forced Mr. Bentley's widow to sell her.

Artemis was bought by "Jugend in Arbeit e.V.", a non-profit association, and was brought to Hamburg where restoration started in 1995/1996, supported (among others) by Stiftung Hamburg Maritim.

In 2008 restoration was completed and Artemis was handed over to Stiftung Hamburg Maritim. But she only lasted one season...

In 2009 it was discovered that big parts of Artemis' wooden structure were suffering from fungal decay and so she was laid-up. This time restoration proved to expensive for a non-profit organisation and she was put once more up for sale... but until today I guess no new owner was found.

In 2011 she had to be lifted from the water because increasing decay put her into danger of sinking. And since 2011 she's sitting there where you can see her in the photo...

A lot of nice photos of her interior and technical data here (sorry, the text is in German):

My pleasure, Frank. It's quite thrilling to discover the history of a 117-year-old vessel.

I first came upon her in February 2012 in the exact same position. I'm quite positive I've uploaded some photos back then, too, but I can't find them anymore...

I came across the link you inserted when I was researching her history, but nevertheless thank you for that!:-)

best regards
Jens
