ILE DE RE was initially built as a roll-on/roll-off cargo vessel in 1982, and was later converted into a cable layer in 2002.

ILE DE RE was recently involved in laying the Tasman Global Access cable from Narrabeen Beach in Sydney, Australia to Ngarunui Beach in Raglan, New Zealand. The 2,300 km long cable connects New Zealand to the five main international cable systems currently serving Australia.
