Description:

I'm not quite sure about the history of this cute little vessel. Despite looking modern in 1962 when the photo was taken, I believe she was built in 1930 as Norrkoping at Helsinborg and modernised at some point in her history.Photo by John Low from my collection. She had that name for a very short time. Foundered while under tow later in 1962. Photo taken on the St.Lawrence River off Verchères near Montreal.
Subsequent History:Source Miramar

Thanks for another magnificent photo, René! You are quite right, this is the former NORRKÖPING of 1930, built with engine amidship as some sort of ice going transport vessel. Aquired by Norwegians in 1850 to be used as a sealer in Arctic waters named ISTIND and the next year renamed SELBARDEN. Converted 1952 by H C Stülcken Sohn, Hamburg with a MAN diesel engine aft A series of calamities ended with extensive fire damage in December 1953 and subsequent repairs in 1954-56, completed in Cuxhaven. Sold to Canada in January 1962 as EAST STAR.
