"Cieszyn", small general gargo ship with ice strenghtenings, very modern at that time, was built at Nakskov Skibsvaerft (No.52)
for state enterprise Żegluga Polska, together with sister ship s/s "Śląsk" (No.51), in just four months, for 38.523 GBP per ship.
Both ships served the Finnland route, later traded also to Antwerp and Rotterdam.

Ordered: 1931.07.10, laid down: 1931.09.22, launched: 1931.12.23, completed: 1932.02.18
Callsign: SPAL
Tonnage: 1402 BRT, 758 NRT, deadweight: 1515 DWT
Dimensions: 74,5 m x 10,9 m x 4,8 m
Cargo handling: six 3-ton derricks
Main engine: 4 cyl. Lenz steam engine, 1300 hp, speed ca. 11 Kn
Crew: 31, passengers: 12

Considred a bit jinxed, "Cieszyn" participated in many accidents:
1932.04.01 - grounding on rocks near Utö;
1933.03 - collision near lighthouse ship "Elbe 2";
1934.02.28 - grounding on rocks near Ronskar;
1939.10.12 - collision with Danish s/s "Cyril";
1939.12.15 - collision with Swan Hunter's floating crane "Titan II";
1939.12.19 - collision in convoy, with British s/s 'Harmonic";
1940.04.09 - collision with Norwegian s/s "Hild".

Being chartered by French Mission in May 1940, in June the ship managed to escape from Kaolack to Freetown.
Like mentioned in description, "Cieszyn" was sunk by bombers on 1941.03.20, near Falmouth.

Many beautiful pictures from building time, launching and trials - of both sister ships - are availabe at arkiv.dk:

The sister ship "Śląsk" traded for Polsteam until 1963. Maybe one day she will also appear on shipspotting :-)
