Description:

The 1957 Leghorn built bulk carrier LAS MINAS, owned by Navimar S.A. of Lugano but managed by Carlo Cameli of Genoa, is seen passing Portishead, inbound from Nauru with a cargo of zinc ore concentrate, in the evening of Wednesday 7th June 1967.

On purchasing the ship in 1971 (without change of name) the Italian shipowner Alberto Ravano established in Monte Carlo a new company named Société d'Etudes et de Gestion („S.D.E.G.“) to manage her as well as the newbuilt tanker Sealion owned by Alcino Soc. Di Nav.Marittima of Lugano. Subsequently „S.D.E.G.“ managed most of Ravano’s non-Italian ships, albeit in conjunction with the family’s Baltimore based Tidewater Commercial until its closure in about 1984.

This photograph was published in the November 2016 edition of Shipping Today and Yesterday magazine in connection with an article on Alberto Ravano's shipowning.
