One reason could be the limitations regarding shipping and shipbuilding (forbidden until 1951) imposed on germany after the second world war.

Under these circumstances such an extensive rebuild would make sense.

Yes adenanthos it is the same ship!

Are these 2 photo's of the same ship?, if so the vessel was really extensively rebuild !, I don't see any remains of the previous appearance .
