USS Kearsarge (LHD 3)
US Navy Wasp class Amphibious Assault Ship.
Commissioned in 1993, she is 844 feet long, weighs over 40000 tons, and has a draft 27 feet.  Her crew is 1108.
She can carry over 1800 troops with their equipment (basically 1 battalion landing team), 25 or more helicopters and VSTOL fighters, landing craft as well as having a 300 bed hospital.
She has a self defense suite of NATO Sea Sparrow and RAM anti aircraft/missile missiles, 20mm close in weapon systems, 25mm chain guns and 0.50 machine guns.  Of note is her forward CIWS that is pointed up to allow proper vision from her bridge, on later units of her class they would be placed on top of the island superstructure preventing the need to store the weapon in this manner.
She (or more properly the Marines and aircraft based on her) has rescued downed American flyers from behind enemy lines in both Bosnia and Libya.
