Thanks Phil - I have just found the same on Italian Wikipedia:

These two corvettes were never taken into the Italian Navy as they had been completed and paid for - they remained impounded but with Iraqi crews (at least for a while).
That defence blog fills in a lot of the gaps (need for the ships, revised armaments etc) - thanks for finding it, and to Tomasello for bringing us the photo in the first place.

Maybe, but where have they come from? They do not seem to be the vessels originally built for Iraq but incorporated into the Italian Navy as a result of arms embargos.

EIDE TRADER was on voyage from FlorÝ, Gibraltar and La Spezia for Port Said, Fujairah and Umm Qasr (Iraq, due 20/6)
