It's a so-called Thyssen-WAAS icebreaking bow. I believe this ship was the first one to be converted to this somewhat uncommon and unorthodox icebreaking bow type, followed by the Soviet (later Russian) icebreakers Mudyug and Kapitan Sorokin.

Thyssen-WAAS bow has some good qualities but as a whole it's not as good as a well-designed conventional icebreaking bow. As a result, no more icebreakers were built with such bow geometry.
