Thanks for better information on this ship.

It's not that unusual for navies to purchase merchant ships for service as auxiliaries of one sort or another. But, so far as I can tell, the French Navy never had anything nto do with this ship, but she was sold by the initial French commercial owners to the West German Navy, reportedly in 1961.

@davidships. Is that unusual for a vessel not to be built specifically for a navy. So was it just the French navy in those days that 'received' merchant navy ships into their ranks as it were ?

Thanks for the link @rgr004. Very interesting to see the original design plans. I wonder what she actually looks like now inside her hull, if she's had any modifications etc and her engine room also. Regards,

Built 1956 by Dubigeon-Normandie SA at Nantes-Chantenay (Yd 757) for Société Navale Caennaise, Caen (she was not in the French Navy) as AMALTHÉE, a general cargo ship with additional wine tanks.

It looks as if she had a sister ENÉE (Yd 758, IMO 5104186). See

Thanks Jim. Drawings made more than 60 years ago. Constructed perhaps 60 years ago. One of her kind, or in a serie? Very special compared to other ships? Even here in Norway we have great challenges in taking care of all ships of special design/history.

Interesting to see her drawings, but I could not find year of her construction. Is it known?
MattyBoy on Jul 10, 2017 20:43 (11 months ago)
The only interest being shown is that of the seagulls !!
MattyBoy on Jul 10, 2017 20:24 (11 months ago)
That's a shame - she'd make a great museum ship. A smaller version of a Liberty ship. Her masts almost look the same. Unfortunately her freeboard is too low.

I am afraid that there is not a crowd of buyers for this old ship. Frenchbuilt, ex French Navy "Almathee", ex German Navy 1961-1974 A1400 "Schwarwald(?)", ex Greek Navy 1976 - 2009 A415 "Evros", mostly in function as ammunition transport ship.
MattyBoy on Jul 10, 2017 17:45 (11 months ago)
Awaiting a sale presumably.

Believe decommissioned
MattyBoy on Jul 10, 2017 17:36 (11 months ago)
Thanks phantom - is she still active though?
