Yes, there were other warships around: the Liaoning naval group included guided-missile destroyers PLAN Jinan 152 and PLAN Yinchuan 175, as well as guided-missile frigate PLAN Yantai 538. However, they were tucked inside the base, while local forces were dispatched to keep an eye on the big baby: I've seen PLAN Qinzhou 597 corvette, and one peculiar new yacht-like auxiliary, by the name of "Southern Cross 87", and very few info available on her.
I will upload photos of PLAN Yantai 538 and that yacht soon.
