WELCOME TO SHIPSPOTTING.COM
Description:
Seen on a gray June day in 1995, she was he only Type 82 Destroyer built, being commissioned in 1973.
At 7,000 tons she was considered large & powerful enough by some experts, such as the publishers of `Jane`s Fighting Ships`, to be classified as a Light Cruiser, being equiped with the new Sea Dart & Ikara missile systems. She is also unique in having 3 funnels, one for her Steam set & two for her new Rolls Royce Olympus gas turbines.
With the cancellation in 1966 of the 55,000ton CVA-01 Carriers, her 3 sister ships were cancelled as they were designed to escort them. With no new carriers, the navy decided on the Type 42 Destroyer which carried a helicopter, hanger & flight deck. She took part in the Falklands war in 1982.
She became harbour training ship in late 1991, replacing the County Class Destroyer HMS Kent. Having been launched in June 1969, she is now over 48yrs old.
