Motor ships of the ST type are medium dry-cargo vessels of the “river-sea” class, having a hold with hatch covers, with two decks, with double sides and a double bottom, with a superstructure in the bow, and an engine room in the stern. Initially, the vessels were intended mainly for the transportation of fresh vegetables, as they were built under the Food Program of the USSR Government.


In the 1990s and 2000s, almost all ships were refitted to improve their seaworthiness, galleries on the lower deck were closed and a high bulwark was made on the tank. Part of the vessels were converted into oil tankers, tankers and one vessel was converted into a gas carrier.
