She was built in 1980 at the Cockerill Shipyard at Hoboken, Belgium as FEDERAL DANUBE (hull #892) along with 3 sisters, FEDERAL OTTAWA (hull #893), FEDERAL MAAS (hull #894) and FEDERAL THAMES (hull #895).. All 4 were built for the Canadian based shipping company, Federal Commerce & Navigation for international service and all were fitted for Great Lakes trading..
In 1995 she was renamed LAKE ONTARIO and in 2009 she became OAKGLEN (3) after she was purchased by Canada Steamship Lines.. FEDERAL OTTAWA (LAKE ERIE - 1995, RICHELIEU - 2009), FEDERAL MAAS (LAKE MICHIGAN - 1995, MAPLEGLEN - 2009) and FEDERAL THAMES (LAKE SUPERIOR - 1995, SAGUENAY - 2009) were also purchased by CSL however only OAKGLEN remains in service today.. RICHELIEU and SAGUENAY were sold for scrapping in 2013 while MAPLEGLEN was sold for dismantling in 2015..
