Description:

AMAZONAS (IMO 5013727 - Hamburg, Germany) - 11 June 1965 - Photographed while she was sailing downbound in the Welland Canal at Thorold, Ontario, Canada.. Photos by Jack Heinz..

She was built in 1952 at Lubeck, Germany as AMAZONAS and she ended up sailing under this name for 20 years.. In 1972 she was renamed VIKI. On 17 August 1973 while she was on a voyage from Chekka, Lebanon to Lagos, Nigeria with a cargo of bagged cement she was in a collision with the Dutch general cargo ship GREBBESTROOM off the Algerian coast in the Mediterranean Sea..

Following the collision VIKI sank however, thankfully her entire crew was rescued by GREBBESTROOM..
