Splendid stuff Trenor! I have always been fascinated by the old Soviet liners, particularly the ex-German ones. KARELIYA is still with us, although in lay-up at Hong Kong as the STARRY METROPOLIS, her days might soon be over.

Captain Ted, could be that cargo are wooden planks, or any other kind of wood, commonly used at the Canaries to build cages for the export of tomatoes (since replaced by carton boxes). No fish cartons for sure! Regards Trenor

When I look at the cargo, it seems to be frozen fish boxes ?

Thanks for your kind comments IACSman, friendship and Pica.Ahead of "Rossiya", the ferries "Kareliya" and "Kazakhstan". The cargo piled up on the quayside shown that 38 years ago, things were very different. However there was a police control at the 4 entrances to the port. Free access ended in 2006. Regards Trenor

Thanks your kind comments IACsman, friendship and Pica. Yes, ahead of her there were the ferries "Kareliya" and "Kazakhstan". A real Russian invasion!

Amazing picture indeed. And the history of the vessel, scrapped after some 48 years. She has certainly seen the polical scenary changed during her lifetime :-) Since built in Germany in 1938, I assume she became a "war prize" after 1945 when she, presumably, entered Soviet service?
There is another Soviet cruise / pax vessel ahead of her as well?
