Description:

Dique Reina Sofia (part of), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.

30/01/2018, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.

The Dique (Quay) Reina Sofia has for decades played host to all kinds of vessels for as many reasons as you can think of. Dozens of large Russian fish factory freeze trawlers would lie alongside for weeks on end being maintained, sometimes being abandoned.

The island's strategic location in the Atlantic has been known for hundreds of years as a sanctuary.

Latterly with the downturn in world oil prices, this has deeply affected the astronomical costs of oil exploration and several drilling rigs found their way to this safe haven for lay up and/or repairs.
Two recent victims have been sold for scrap to Turkey - the 'Sedco Energy' and the 'Sedco Express', now to be replaced with the unemployed drillships, as can be seen in this photo.

All await contracts by the oil majors and yet, mortgage payments and running maintenenace costs still have to be met.

These vessels cost around $750 million and upwards apiece.
Typical daily contractual rates were circa $400 to 500,000 *per day*. This is but a a pipedream today.

Left to right:
'Atwood Advantage' IMO 9626170
'West Polaris' IMO 9372535
'Stena Drillmax' IMO 9364932
'Pacific Mistral' IMO 9496159
'Pacific Meltem' IMO 9657818 (arrived 29/01/2018).

Three more drill ships are anchored offshore.
One drillship is berthed out of this view, the billion dollar 'Stena Icemax', and two ultra-deepwater drilling rigs are also in port laid up.
45 miles away in Tenerife, there are yet more.
