Description:

US Army Corps of Engineers hopper dredge. She is a twin screwed, twin shafted vessel that is used for emergency and national support dredging anywhere in the world. Supposedly she is the only vessel in the world that can discharge material three ways - through conventional bottom discharging, through side casting, and pumping material ashore in a pipeline.
Seen here going east towards the Atlantic Ocean past the ocean beach overlook of Fort Macon of Atlantic Beach NC leaving the Morehead City area.

In the U.S. the task of maintaining inland waterways is assigned to the Army Corps of engineers. The castle, marked on the funnel, is the insignia of the Army Corps of Engineers, and is normally worn on the uniforms of Army soldiers to indicate that they are members of the Corps of Engineers. However, these dredges are actually manned not by soldiers but by merchant marine crews employed by the Army.
