Funchal was built in 1961 in Denmark to Empresa Insulana de Navegação to make trips between the portuguese mainland and the archipelagos of Madeira and Azores carrying passengers and cargo. In 1973 the ship was remodeled to be able to make cruises.
Some portuguese ships, such as Principe Perfeito (IMO 5285045) or Infante Dom Henrique (IMO 5160805), served to transport portuguese authorities, especially to overseas lands. Salazar never left Portugal to visit the portuguese colonies, and I think he only visited Madeira in 1925. I'm not sure about this.
Funchal was used for some portuguese authorities, for example in 1972 when took the president Americo Tomás and his presidential entourage to Brazil to deliver the mortal remains of Pedro IV of Portugal, Pedro I of Brazil.
I think Funchal did not serve as a yacht as, for example, the Azor of General Francisco Franco.
Surely someone here in the site with more knowledge can give their opinion.

FUNCHAL did serve on occasions as presidential yacht, but not when Salazar was president (only ever for three months in 1951). Her principal function prior to cruising was as scheduled liner on Portugal-Atlantic isles routes.

Possibly Funchal was used to take government ministers on an official visit to Madeira?

As portuguese, I know very well who Salazar was. What I do not understand is Funchal being the Salazar yacht.

António de Oliveira Salazar was the dictatorial Prime Minister of Portugal from 1932 to 1968

What do you mean with "ex Salazar yacht"?
