Description:

The retired destroyer USS Charles F. Adams (DDG 2) lying tied up to the USS Ticonderoga and USS Yorktown in the reserve basin at the old Philadelphia Naval Shipyard reserve basin.
She was commissioned in 1960 and decommissioned in 1990. She was the first US Navy ship designed and built with guided missiles as her primary armament. She was based primarily in the Atlantic Ocean during her career and was part of the fleet that blockaded Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Currently it is planned to moved her to Mayport Florida and be opened as a museum ship. If you look closely you can see the barrels have been removed from her 5" Gun and her main SPS-39 air search radar has been moved from her mast to her aft deck. Also you can see her early Mk 11 twin Tarter missile launcher.

Yes, actually the first 5 ships of her class were retired - one of the main reasons was that they had the older Mk 26 launchers and not VLS systems and the navy didn't want to upgrade them. And, I believe the first VLS cruisers will start to decommission in the next couple of years.

Ticonderoga also retired ? Wow, I was reading a book about her previously when she was newly launched. Time flies !
