Description:

US Navy Essex class aircraft carrier. First commissioned in 1943, and finally retired in 1974 - She has been displayed as a museum ship at Pier 86 on the Hudson River in New York City NY since 1982.
She has an extensive history, having been an active participant in World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War period.
An interesting experience in her history, is that in 1944, after a torpedo hit, she had to rig a SAIL to help her steer while traveling back to harbor for repairs.
During her history she was designated CV, CVA, or CVS depending on the mission.
The structures on her flight deck are housing the Space Shuttle Enterprise and an aircraft restoration facility.
