Description:

Regulus I Missile on Launcher.
US Navy cruise missile submarine.
She and her sister (USS Grayback) along with 2 converted WW II Fleet Boats and the nuclear powered USS Halibut made 40 patrols off the Soviet Union north Pacific coast in 1959-1964. The Regulus Missile Systems they carried were equipped with nuclear warheads. These represented the US Navy's first nuclear weapon patrols. They were superseded and replaced by the Polaris SSBNs and later todays Ohio/Trident SSBNs after blazing the path.
The Growler was a modification of the Tang class (the first postwar submarines for the US) and could carry 4 Regulus I or two larger Regulus II cruise missiles on patrols lasting up to 2 months or more. The submarine would have had to surface and erect the missiles on a launcher after removing them from a watertight hanger to fire them. In addition she was armed with 8 21" torpedo tubes for standard US Navy torpedoes.
Commissioned in 1958, she is 3550 tons full load, 318 feet long and 27 feet wide. She was capable of 17 knots surface and 12 submerged and carried a crew of 87.
Retired in 1964 after the Regulus system was replaced by the above mentioned Polaris system, she has been displaced in NYC at Pier 86 since the late 1980s. She is the ONLY US Navy missile sub that can be toured by the public that I know off.
