Description:

US Navy Newport class Landing Ship Tank docked in the reserve basin at the old naval shipyard in Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.
Built in San Diego CA, she was in commission from 1971 to 1994. She is 8792 tons full load, 522 feet long (with landing ramp, 500 feet at the waterline), 70 feet wide, and had a top speed of over 20 knots. She could carry up to 400 Marines and had a parking area of 29,000 square feet (enough for 29 Main Battle Tanks).
She was based on the east coast and made a number of deployments to the Caribbean and Mediterranean. She assisted with operating mine clearance and ordnance disposal divers in the Suez Canal in 1974 to help open it after the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
She was struck from reserve in 2008 and is currently awaiting disposal and will most likely either be scrapped or used for target practice.
