In 1935 Mr. Thorden decided to establish a regular line service between Finland and
U.S.A. he ordered a modern motor vessel from Íresundsvarvet and shortly later a sister
vessel from Crichton-Vulcan (CAROLINA THORDEN). By the tragical loss of the first one
(JOHANNA THORDEN) at Pentland Firth on the return leg of her maiden voyage with loss of
30 crew members of total of 36. It was decided to order vessel no.3 with delivery in 1938
(MATHILDA THORDEN). By delivery of the last two more were ordered for delivery 1940.
As mr. Thorden moved back to his home town Uddevalla during the war the last two vessels
(SELMA THORDEN & KRISTINA THRDEN) As CAROLINA THORDEN was lost in WWII.
The service reopened after the war with 3 ships and Copenhagen was included in the line.
