WELCOME TO SHIPSPOTTING.COM
Description:
Delivered in 1968 by Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co, Chester, Pennsylvania, USA, AMERICAN LYNX and her seven sister "L" class ships (Type C4-S-68a) were the first purpose-built containerships (as opposed to conversions) for United States Lines.
Steam turbine driven, with a grt of 19,203 and dwt of 20,904, they offered a (by today’s standards tiny) container capacity of 1,028 TEU. In 1988, after United States Lines had gone into bankruptcy, AMERICAN LYNX was sold to Puerto Rico Maritime Shipping Authority of Maimi and renamed MAYAGUEZ, as which she survived until heading for the scrappers at Alang, India in 2004.
