Description:

Liquid (molten) sulphur tanker; 18,859 grt; 26,988 dwt.
Owner: Sulphur Carriers Ltd. Managers: Naess, Denholm & Co Ltd, London
Built: 1964 by Furness Shipbuilding Co Ltd, Haverton Hill on Tees. Yard no. 517.
Main engine: six-cylinder, two-stroke Sulzer 6RD90 of 13,800 bhp at 119 rpm. Speed: 16 knots.
1974-to management of re-styled Denholm Ship Management Ltd, renamed NORDIC TEXAS.
1984-to breakers at Brownsville, Texas, USA 12/6.
NAESS TEXAS and sister ship, NAESS LOUISIANA, were the first ships built specifically for the carriage of molten sulphur, their predecessors having mainly been T2 tanker conversions. Molten sulphur needs to be kept at a temperature of 140 deg Centigrade during transportation, otherwise it goes solid and is then very difficult to re-melt.

Remarkably successful pair of ships and a credit to the builders and those who sailed on her.
I was supposed to join her as Cadet but a last mi. switch put me onto the Naess Sovereign

Great to see this vessel again, brought back memories. Sailed on her in 1968 as Radio Officer - Jack Stephen
