Description:
The small passenger ship BAHAMA STAR, no longer fit for the cruise ship trade because she didn't meet modern fire prevention standards, was purchased to become a floating restaurant. That plan was faltering, and she was anchored off the entrance to Port Hueneme, California. The owners were already arranging with Union Minerals and Alloys Corp. to sell her for scrapping at Oakland CA when a storm on 3 April, 1970, broke her anchor chain and pushed her aground.
The decision was made just to "bury" her in place. Her superstructure was removed and scuttled offshore. The listing hull was surrounded by boulders and covered in sand, making a fishing jetty out of her. Unfortunately, the same storms that blew her aground have also served to uncover her, making a rather dangerous tidal attraction of her exposed hull and decks.
Note that her name is often rendered at LA JANELLE, but the spelling with three "E"s is clearly visible in photos of the ship taken in 1970.
