Description:
The Greek tramp "Peleus" loading cargo at Port Adelaide's No 11 Berth, c1938. Built in 1928 by Wm, Gray & Coy at West Hartlepool, originally named "Egglestone".
Taken over by the British Government at the outbreak of WWII and subsequently torpedoed and sunk by U852 [Captain Heinz-Wilhelm Eck]on 13 March 1944. This action is known as "The Peleus Incident". Eck and four of his crew were found guilty of War Crimes; three were executed. Refer to the Wikipedia entry for a full description.
